Description: This session has been redesigned based on past user meetings. It has been developed to help sites that are new to the world of Voyager and Unix, no matter what size of institution or what operating system you are running. You will be able to get hands-on practice with a live server. The class will give you basic exposure to Unix, and set you on a path for working with more advanced areas (like Certification 300: Service Your Way, WebVoyáge Configuration, and Bulk Importing). The first half of the course has been designed to be lecture; the second half of the course has been designed to be hands-on (lab time). Topics will include:
Certification: After successfully completing the labs, and having an additional 3 months exposure to Voyager, you will be certified and able to attend the course Certification 300: Service Your Way. Certification 300: Service Your Way
Date/Time:
One two-day course,
Cost: $750.00 (effective May 2003) Prerequisites: Attendees must meet the criteria listed below. Due to this, we may regretfully decline registration from persons who do not meet these criteria.
Intended Audience:
Description: This class is geared to all types and sizes of institutions that want to improve their own capabilities in maintaining and troubleshooting Voyager systems. You will be able to learn more about how Voyager works behind the scenes, learn about the Voyager structure, and in turn, increase the level of support you can offer locally. The class also will give you the terms and language that Endeavor uses in describing the parts of the system. This will aid in communicating with the Endeavor Support staff. Overall, the class will improve your ability to support your own system and improve Endeavor's ability to support you in that effort. Topics include:

| Location for 2006 NWEG Conference | |
| Green River C.C. and Renton Technical College are both interested in hosting the 2006 NWEG conference. Taylor is in discussions with Jennifer Dysart, Green River C.C., and Jinny Wesson, Renton Technical College. When the conference location has been decided, the Board will send out an announcement to NVUG-L. | |
| Nominations | |
| Chairperson-elect shall serve one year as Chairperson-elect and then serve one year as Chairperson. | |
| The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected in odd numbered years for a two-year term. | |
| Elections will be held at the NWEG conference in Boise on June 2, 2005. | |
| The Chairperson-elect responsibilities include being in charge of programming for the 2006 NWEG conference. The program should have a front-line focus and should include as many local presenters as possible. For example, ISU is providing four programs for the 2005 conference in Boise. Topics should cover tips or workarounds for functions that most users struggle with. It would be easier if the Chairperson-Elect was from the area where the conference is going to be held. | |
| Taylor invited nominations from the floor for Chairperson-elect and Secretary-Treasurer. | |
| Dale Burke, Edmonds C.C., was nominated for the position of Chairperson-elect. Dale accepted the nomination. | |
| There were no nominations for Secretary-Treasurer. | |
| 2006 NWEG Conference | |
|
The attendees suggested the following topics
for the 2006 program: - Unicode - Voyager 5 - Call slips - UB Universal Borrowing - Patron purge - Patron privacy issues - Cognos / Meridian |
|
| Cindy asked if there is any interest in inviting Alan Manifold to conduct a pre-conference workshop on Access. There is a possibility that Endeavor might be able to provide Access training. Josephine Crawford said that she would send Cindy a list of all the Endeavor customers in the Pacific Northwest. The group indicated that they would be interested. Cindy will investigate the possibility of offering a pre-conference workshop on Access for the 2006 NWEG conference. | |
| NVUG-L Listserv | |
| Dale Burke asked if the NVUG-L listserv is still viable. Is it used enough to justify it's existence? The listserv is currently being used as a way to disseminate information regarding the NWEG conference. At this time NWEG is not paying for the use of NVUG-L. Royal Roads has graciously continued to host NVUG-L. The new Board will discuss the viability of the listserv and get back to the NWEG members about their decision. | |
| Unicode | |
| Taylor asked for those who had upgraded to Unicode to share their experiences. | |
| Jody Hopper, Intel Corp. - 40,000 bibs were upgraded to Unicode on a test server and then on the production servers. The error rate was less than one half percent. | |
| Teresa Warren, Sandra Shropshire & Philip Homan, ISU - It was a fairly smooth upgrade. There was a problem with bulk import that was fixed with a patch. They weren't down very long for the upgrade. They didn't experience any problems with WebVoyage slowing down. | |
| John Greer, Univ. of Montana - WebVoyage has been slow since the upgrade to Unicode. The indexes were rebuilt which seems to have helped. They were down for two days for the upgrade. | |
| UB - Universal Borrowing | |
| Taylor asked for those who are using Universal Borrowing to share their experiences. | |
| WIN - There will be a lot of matrix work involved with multiple agencies in a single database. Multiple agencies in single databases produces heavy bugs in SysAdmin because the matrixes become so large. | |
| General Comments Regarding the Keynote | |
| The concept of self-service circulation is gaining in popularity. Some college and university libraries are combining circulation and reference services at one service point. This seems to be working well. | |
| Some community colleges are experiencing a shortage of funding due to four-year colleges pulling their funding. | |
| The idea of buying books from amazon.com instead of requesting them via ILL is a viable idea when the cost of the book is compared with the cost of ILL processing. The average cost of an ILL is $32. Leonara Crema, UBC Library, reported that the UBC Library buys books from amazon.com and allows the patron to check them out before they have been processed. Once the book has been returned, it's sent to processing. | |
| The meeting was adjourned at 8:30p. | |
